The Campus Kitchens Project (CKP) is a national leader in community service for students and is the future of hunger relief. CKP is empowering the next generation of leaders to implement innovative models for combating hunger, developing food systems and helping communities help themselves.

On the weekend of September 16-17th the LWC Campus Kitchen officially launched. The weekend was spent going through what would soon become a weekly routine of food recovery, cooking, and delivery.

The CKP partner with high schools, colleges and universities to share on-campus kitchen space, recover food from cafeterias and engage students as volunteers who prepare and deliver meals to the community. Student volunteers develop partnerships, recover food, plan menus, run cooking shifts, organize drivers, garden, glean and teach nutrition education to children and families. They keep track of all of the paperwork (so we know everything’s being done safely), organize fundraisers, develop curriculum and recruit new student volunteers. They accomplish an incredible amount of work every day.

ABOUT THE LWC CAMPUS KITCHEN LAUNCH

LWC Campus Kitchen is located at "The Pines," an LWC offiliated golf club. The club was kind enough to lend us their kitchen facilities and appliances for this great cause.

The weekend started with leadership team training on Friday afternoon which lead into a recovery shift at Cramner Dining Center at approximately 6:30pm. Meal planning and transportation to storage site were done from 7pm on that Friday night.

Saturday morning started at 10am with another leadership staff training. Staff and volunteers ate lunch together and then set out for The Pines to prepare the CK LWC's first ever set of meals. Meal preparation consisted of cutting vegetables, steaming them, and then lastly letting them cool. Then volunteers distrubuted the recovered food from Cranmer Dining Center into individual containers so that 23 meals could be finalized.  Lastly, volunteers washed dishes, cleaned the kitchen facilities, and delivered the meals to CK LWC's clients throuhgout Adair County.
